Trillium Art Fest β€’ Saturday, October 2, 2010

Saturday was a gorgeous day for an art show. We spent the day in downtown Travelers Rest, SC in Gateway Park as part of the Trillium Art Fest. The morning started out chilly but the sun came out and warmed up the field.

The most interesting conversation of the day was with a friendly gentleman who knew EXACTLY where the inspiration for three of my “water paintings” had come from. He’s been visiting Edisto Island for the last 40 years and thinks it’s one of the most magical places on earth.

We had quite a long chat about Edisto Island and how much he loved my paintings. (Apparently he had seen them before from an e-mail I had sent to his wife.)

It was then that I realized he looked familiar, and told him so. It was at that point he mentioned that he was the Mayor of our town.

Did I recognize him from his position, or have I seen him at other art shows? I really don’t know.

I’m guess it’s the latter, simply because Tim and I have been on somewhat of a “media fast.” It started back in 1990 while in college when they encouraged us to turn off our TVs for the weekend. And then we’ve never really bothered to get back on the grid since then. It’s been my experience that when something “REALLY” news-worthy happens, we hear about it. It may take a few days, but word gets around.

Would you recognize your mayor if he walked into your place of work? Ours was most delightful to talk to. He even gave us his card in case we ever need his help. I love living in a small town! πŸ™‚

Below are some more photos of the day. Our son Nathan spent the day at the show with us, so below are photos of some of the things that he found to be interesting.

HIS most interesting part of the day? The $5 ALL DAY pass to the bounce house. I am sure he bounced at least 3 or 4 hours of the day away… he declared it to be one of the best days of his life.

  1. I had to read this post in two readings because I got interrupted. I stopped reading at the part about the mayor and media fast. When I came back to start reading again I picked up at the wrong spot – about how his most interesting part of the show was the $5 bounce all day ticket. Totally missed the part about Nathan being with you and thought it was your mayor!
