Happy Veterans Day!

What exactly is Veterans Day anyway? My bank and library are both closed, I never get birthday cards (my birthday is the same day), and my neighbor has the day off!

This being my 39th Veterans Day, I thought I should refresh my memory as to its meaning.Β I found a web site that says something along these lines: “Veterans Day is celebrated on the 11th of November. It is the anniversary of the signing the Armistice that finished World War I. The main hostilities of Wolrd War I were properly finished at the 11th hour, of the 11th Day, of the 11th Monday in the year 1918 (on 11/11), with Germany signing the Armistice.”

It had been originally called “Armistice Day,” but in 1954 President Dwight Eisenhower helped to change the name to “Veterans Day,” and it’s been called that ever since. The name change was made to broaden the tribute to “all” veterans, as opposed to just those who had served in World War I.

So thank you very much, to all those who have served to protect our country.

Hopefully you know somebody you can thank today… I’m sure it would make their day to know that their sacrifice to protect our country was not forgotten or gone unnoticed.
